Our interwar bungalow probably needs a rewire. Does that mean every floor comes up?

Less than you might fear. Single-storey homes are the kindest to rewire because most circuits run through the loft and drop down the walls, so there is far less floor lifting than in a two-storey house. There's still disruption: chases in the plaster, some boards up in certain rooms. An emergency visit makes the immediate fault safe; the rewire itself gets surveyed and quoted properly afterwards.

We're converting the loft. Will the original fuse board cope with a shower up there?

Almost certainly not. Older rewireable boards have no RCD protection, which BS 7671 requires for new circuits, and an electric shower alone can draw more than an old board was designed to distribute. New circuits for a conversion are also notifiable under Part P. A fair share of our Lancing call-outs are boards that were given the extra load without the upgrade.

Do electrics near Beach Green really wear out faster?

Noticeably faster. Salt-laden air corrodes the terminals inside outdoor sockets, lights and connection boxes, and the damage stays hidden until damp gets in and trips the board. If your fittings face the sea, properly IP-rated replacements and a periodic inspection are worth having. Where corrosion caused the fault, we can usually fit coastal-grade gear during the emergency visit.

No power in the whole bungalow

Total loss lands on the incoming side: the cut-out fuse, the tails, or a main switch that has failed. Where the main switch will not latch at all, a fault common to every way is holding it down, so the board is split before anything is restored.

Only half the house has power

Two residual devices, each looking after a group of ways, and one earth fault under either removes that whole group. That is why the loss follows the board rather than the rooms. Ways are restored in small batches until it releases again.

Conservatory has no power

Conservatories rarely receive a way of their own. The sockets are usually spurred from whatever was nearest at the time, with the joint buried behind plaster or sitting in a roof void collecting condensation. Locating that connection is most of the work; remaking it takes minutes.

RCD keeps tripping at night

Nothing operates at random. Immersion heaters on timers, freezers running a defrost cycle and security lighting coming on into damp air all raise earth current at fixed hours. We look at what switches itself on before anything is pulled apart.

One breaker keeps switching itself off

Contained faults are the easier ones. Either that single way is being asked for more current than its rating allows, or something on it has shorted. We divide the circuit into sections and test each length until the damaged one identifies itself.

Power trips when I use the hair dryer

Elements degrade internally and pass current to earth long before they stop heating, and the flex near the handle suffers as well. We insulation test the dryer away from the installation, which gives a definite answer instead of swapping sockets and hoping.

Every job ends with the installation left safe, not just switched back on. If a repair has to wait on parts, the affected circuit stays isolated and clearly labelled.
