What We Do In Horsham

Electrical Fault Finding

A Horsham fault can hide behind generations of alterations: an attic bedroom teed off a landing circuit, a kitchen knocked through in the nineties. We test circuit by circuit until the actual cause is found, not just the symptom silenced.

RCD & Fuse Box Tripping

In a town that catches early trains, a board that keeps dropping out is more than a nuisance by 6am. We identify the one circuit or appliance pulling everything else down and leave the rest of the house holding firm.

Complete or Partial Power Loss

Lights on but sockets dead, or one room gone quiet while the street stays lit: partial power loss usually means a failing connection, and failing connections run hot. We trace it and repair it before it becomes a burning smell.

Sparking or Damaged Sockets

Scorch marks, a socket that's warm to the touch, or sparking when you unplug. Stop using it and call — this one shouldn't wait.

Emergency Lighting Repairs

East Street restaurants, Carfax shops and town-centre offices all carry emergency lighting that only earns its keep during a failure. We repair fittings, renew tired batteries and test the system so it works on the one night it has to.

Damaged Cables & Wiring

Between loft conversions, shelf-hanging and garden landscaping, Horsham's cables collect their share of accidental damage. We locate the break, repair or re-run the section and test the whole circuit before it goes back into service.

Common Call-Outs

Common Electrical
Emergencies in Horsham

The faults below account for the majority of our call-outs. Several of them are genuinely urgent, and a short telephone call will establish which category yours falls into.

  • Fuse box tripping again on reset
  • RCD that keeps dropping
  • Power missing from part of the building
  • Burning smell near an outlet
  • Buzzing from the consumer unit
  • Lighting flickering
  • Sparking sockets or switches
  • Wiring exposed to damp
  • Cable damaged or cut
  • Complete loss of supply

While You Wait For Us

If the consumer unit can be reached safely, switch the failed circuit off and leave it isolated. Please unplug whatever was running when the problem began.

Damaged cable, sockets showing scorch marks and wiring that has become wet should not be handled. A breaker that trips as soon as it is reset has detected a genuine fault.

Smoke, a burning smell or a suspected fire means leaving the building and contacting the emergency services first. Please telephone us once you are outside.

Fault Finding

Finding the Fault,
Not Just the Symptom

An intermittent trip that behaves perfectly while you are watching still has a cause. We work through the installation circuit by circuit with proper test equipment, so the repair fixes what is actually wrong rather than guessing at it.

What To Expect

How an Emergency Call-Out Works

01

Call Us

Describe the fault when you ring. A qualified electrician answers, including in the evening and at weekends.

02

Arrival & Pricing

You are told the call-out rate and given a realistic arrival window before an electrician travels.

03

Test & Diagnose

The supply is isolated safely, after which testing identifies the cause and the findings are explained to you.

04

Repair or Make Safe

Most repairs are completed the same visit. Where a component is needed, the installation is made safe and a return agreed.

One photo from your phone
changes the whole call-out

Snap the fuse board, the scorched socket or the tripped switch before you ring, and the engineer sets off with the right parts on the van instead of a best guess.

Circuits Dropping Out

Which Circuit Has Given Up?

Most call-outs come down to one misbehaving circuit rather than the whole installation. Identifying which way it sits on does most of the diagnosis.

Everything is off and nothing works

Open the board and look at the main switch. If it is already on and the house is still dead, the trouble is above the consumer unit, in the tails, the meter or the cut-out. We confirm that on site with readings before anyone else is called out.

Sockets work but the lights are off

Lighting has separate protection, so live sockets are no surprise. Most often a lamp has arced as it failed and taken the breaker with it. Water tracking into a ceiling fitting does the same thing more slowly. We start at the last light that was working.

Garage sockets have no power

A detached garage is normally fed by armoured cable from a way in the house, sometimes into a small board out there. Water in a joint, physical damage to the run, or a device out there nobody has looked at. We test that feed end to end.

RCD trips randomly for no reason

There is always a reason, it is just spread thinly. Each way contributes a few milliamps of earth current, and once the standing total approaches the limit, one damp spell or one heater firing takes it over. A clamp meter shows which way is contributing most.

Socket circuit breaker keeps going

A breaker operating while the residual device holds means current, not leakage: too much connected to one circuit, or two conductors touching. Heaters and extension leads explain most excess demand, damaged flex or cable pinched behind a unit most shorts. We measure the load before anything else.

Fuse box trips when I use the hoover

Vacuum motors arc by design, and a worn one produces enough earth current to move a residual device. If the breaker is going instead, look at the flex where it retracts, or at what else was already running on that circuit. We test the machine and the circuit separately.

No circuit gets guessed at. Whatever we find is isolated properly, and you'll be told plainly what has been repaired and what still needs putting right.

How It Works

Records and Certification
Issued as Standard

Once a repair is complete the circuit is tested and the results recorded, with the certification appropriate to the work provided rather than promised for a later date.

Where a landlord, letting agent or managing agent needs written confirmation of what was found and what was carried out, that is supplied without you having to request it more than once.

FAQs Made Simple

FIND YOUR ANSWERS
My house is on the Causeway and it's listed. Can you do emergency work without getting into trouble with the conservation officer?

Emergency make-safe work is about removing danger, not altering the building, so isolating a faulty circuit or replacing a damaged accessory like-for-like doesn't normally trigger listed building consent. Where a permanent repair would affect historic fabric, chasing into old plaster, lifting Horsham stone flags, disturbing timber panelling, we make the installation safe first and flag what needs consent before anyone starts cutting. You get a working, safe house tonight and a proper plan for the rest.

We're in a new-build at Wickhurst Green and still under the developer's warranty. Should I call you or them when something trips?

Warranty cover and a live fault are two different problems. If the board won't reset at 11pm, the developer's aftercare line won't send anyone until office hours, so we come out, find the faulty circuit, isolate it and get everything else back on. We write up exactly what we found and touched, which protects your warranty claim rather than voiding it. Anything that's genuinely a build defect, you then push back to the developer with evidence in hand.

We're out past Mannings Heath on an overhead supply. When the power goes, how do I know if it's my wiring or the network?

Check your neighbours first. If the whole lane is dark, it's UK Power Networks' side and you should call 105, their free national number, because no electrician can fix the overhead line. If your house is the only one off, or half your circuits work and half don't, the fault is likely inside your installation or on the cable run to an outbuilding, and that's ours. If you're not sure, describe it on the phone and we'll tell you straight which call to make before you spend money on a call-out you don't need.

Can you come out tonight?

Yes. We run a 24 hour rota that covers evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Call and you get a real arrival window before anyone sets off, not a vague promise.
