What We Do In Hove

Electrical Fault Finding

Bay-fronted Hove houses have been altered for a century, so the symptom and the fault are often rooms apart. We test from the board outwards and pinpoint the failed junction, cable or accessory before anything gets opened up.

RCD & Fuse Box Tripping

A board that refuses to reset usually has one leaking circuit pulling everything down, often a loft room, garden office or outdoor supply added long after the board went in. We find it and leave the rest of the house running.

Complete or Partial Power Loss

When a Hove house goes dark the cause can be as small as one worn main switch. We prove exactly where the supply stops, restore what can safely run and work methodically rather than guessing in the dark.

Sparking or Damaged Sockets

Sparking, crackling or heat marks around a socket mean the terminals behind it are breaking down. Switch it off at the wall, keep appliances out of it and call; it is usually a contained repair rather than a lost evening.

Emergency Lighting Repairs

Stairwell and exit lighting in Hove's blocks and business premises has one job: working when the mains doesn't. We replace failed fittings and batteries and check the rest of the system while we're at it.

Damaged Cables & Wiring

Between renovations, loft boarding and a hundred years of picture hooks, Hove cables take plenty of accidental hits. We repair or reroute damaged runs into accessible junctions, so the fault doesn't resurface behind the plaster.

Common Call-Outs

Common Electrical
Emergencies in Hove

These faults arise more frequently than any others. Each is worth a telephone call, and several should not be left until the following morning.

  • Fuse box that trips repeatedly
  • RCD refusing to reset
  • Sockets dead in one part of the flat or house
  • Burning smell at a socket
  • Consumer unit buzzing
  • Lights flickering
  • Sparking switches
  • Water close to wiring
  • Damaged cable
  • No supply at all

While You Wait For Us

Where the board can be reached safely, turn the affected circuit off and leave it isolated. Please disconnect the appliance that was in use when the fault appeared.

Scorched sockets, damaged cable and anything wet in the vicinity of wiring should be left untouched. A breaker that will not hold is protecting the circuit rather than failing.

If there is smoke, a smell of burning or any sign of fire, leave the property, contact the emergency services, and speak to us afterwards.

Fault Finding

Finding the Fault,
Not Just the Symptom

An intermittent trip that behaves perfectly while you are watching still has a cause. We work through the installation circuit by circuit with proper test equipment, so the repair fixes what is actually wrong rather than guessing at it.

Power Loss In Hove

Six Ways Hove Homes Lose Power

Every power loss looks the same from your side: no lights, no sockets. From ours, the pattern you're describing narrows it down fast.

See What's Causing Your Power Loss → 0333 360 6904

No power in the whole house

Nothing in the property is working — that's usually the incoming supply itself or the main switch at the consumer unit, not one circuit failing on its own. Before we go near the board, we check the cut-out and the meter tails to rule those out first.

Power out in half the house

On a split-load board, one RCD covers half your circuits — so if it trips, that whole side drops while the other stays live. It's rarely the board itself; more often it's a single circuit on that side pulling the rest down with it.

No power in one room

When it's just the one room, the fault is nearly always local to that circuit: a failed appliance, a damaged cable, or a socket that's given up. We isolate that circuit and trace it back before opening anything else.

Why does my RCD keep tripping

A repeat trip on reset usually means current is leaking away to earth on one of that RCD's circuits. The RCD isn't the problem here — it's doing its job, catching a genuine fault. We isolate each circuit in turn until the culprit turns up.

MCB keeps tripping on one circuit

When one breaker won't hold but the rest of the board stays fine, the problem lives on that circuit alone: too much load, or a short somewhere in the cable, rather than anything wrong with the installation as a whole. We test it circuit by circuit rather than assume where the fault sits.

Fuse box trips only when one appliance is on

Kettle, shower, washing machine, immersion heater — appliances with heating elements are the usual suspects when the board only drops for one of them. Nine times out of ten the fault's inside the appliance itself, so we pull it off the circuit and test it in isolation before we even think about the wiring.

Whatever's caused it, we make the property safe first and fix what we can on the same visit. If a part needs ordering in, we'll get you back on supply and return as soon as it lands.

FAQs Made Simple

FIND YOUR ANSWERS
My flat is on a communal landlord supply. Can you work on it, or is that the freeholder's problem?

Everything from your meter onwards, the consumer unit in the hallway cupboard and the circuits it feeds, is yours, and we can work on it. The communal riser and landlord's supply belong to the freeholder or the network operator. Part of the job is proving which side the fault sits on, making your side safe, and telling you exactly who to chase if it isn't ours to fix.

The fuse box in my hallway cupboard still has rewireable fuses. Should I be worried?

Old boards like that were standard issue in Hove conversions and plenty still function. What they lack is RCD protection, the thing that saves lives when a cable or appliance faults. Scorch marks, a warm smell from the cupboard or fuses that keep blowing are reasons to call us tonight; otherwise book an inspection and plan the upgrade properly.

Can you come out tonight?

Yes. We run a 24 hour rota that covers evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Call and you get a real arrival window before anyone sets off, not a vague promise.

I'm a letting agent with managed stock in Hove. Can you attend for a tenant and report back to us?

We do this a lot. Give us the tenant's number and access details, we attend, make the fault safe and send you a written summary with photos for the compliance file. If the problem relates to something an EICR flagged, we'll say so plainly so you can evidence the remedial work.
