What We Do In East Grinstead

Electrical Fault Finding

Tracing a dead circuit through a building that has been altered every few decades is the East Grinstead specialism, whether it's a villa off the station approach or a shop with three back extensions. We test methodically until the fault is found, not guessed at.

RCD & Fuse Box Tripping

In a commuter household the tripping usually starts at half past six, when the house comes alive and every appliance draws at once. We find the one circuit or appliance pulling the board down and leave the rest holding firm.

Complete or Partial Power Loss

Total loss with the board apparently fine usually means the failure sits upstream, at the main switch, the tails or a buried joint. We test from the meter forwards and restore everything that proves healthy.

Sparking or Damaged Sockets

A socket that cracks, sparks or sits loose in old plaster is not a wait-until-payday job. Switch that circuit off, leave it alone and call; we replace the accessory, check what's behind it and test before it goes live again.

Emergency Lighting Repairs

Shops on London Road, the offices above them and the trade units north of the centre all carry emergency lighting that has to pass its test, not just glow. We repair or replace failed fittings and leave you compliant.

Damaged Cables & Wiring

Loft conversions, garden rooms and decades of confident DIY leave nicked, overstretched and unclipped cable behind East Grinstead's walls. We make damaged runs safe on the spot and replace what can't be saved.

Common Call-Outs

Common Electrical
Emergencies in East Grinstead

These are the faults behind most of our call-outs. If you are uncertain how serious your own situation is, that is precisely what the telephone call is for.

  • Fuse box tripping without warning
  • RCD that resets then drops
  • Power gone from one part of the property
  • Burning smell around a socket
  • Noise coming from the consumer unit
  • Flickering or unstable lighting
  • Sparking accessories
  • Wiring affected by water
  • Damaged cable
  • No electricity at all

While You Wait For Us

Where it is safe to reach the consumer unit, switch the failed circuit off and leave it isolated, and unplug whatever was in use when the fault first appeared.

Scorched fittings, damaged cable and wiring close to water should be left untouched. A breaker that repeatedly trips back is signalling a genuine fault rather than a defective breaker.

If a burning smell or smoke is noticed, treat the situation as a fire. Leave the property, contact the emergency services, and telephone us once you are outside.

Fault Finding

Finding the Fault,
Not Just the Symptom

An intermittent trip that behaves perfectly while you are watching still has a cause. We work through the installation circuit by circuit with proper test equipment, so the repair fixes what is actually wrong rather than guessing at it.

What To Expect

How an Emergency Call-Out Works

01

Call Us

Tell us what the fault appears to be. A qualified electrician takes the call, including outside normal working hours.

02

Arrival & Pricing

You are given the attendance rate and a realistic time of arrival before anybody sets off.

03

Test & Diagnose

Safe isolation is the first job, followed by testing to establish exactly where the fault sits.

04

Repair or Make Safe

Most faults are dealt with in one visit. Anything requiring a part is made safe and a return appointment agreed.

Saves Everyone Time

Text us a picture of your fuse board or the damaged fitting and the duty electrician can often advise straight away, then arrive carrying the right parts first time.

Trips And Total Losses

The Fault Is Rarely Where You Think

The room that went dark is rarely where the damage sits. Six calls we take constantly, and what each one usually turns out to be.

Power keeps cutting out then coming back

Supply that restores itself points at a connection, not a severed cable. A slack terminal at the board, a loose neutral in a joint box, or a tired connection on the service side all behave this way. We run the ways up under load and look for heat.

Power out on one floor only

A whole floor going quiet is a circuit matter rather than a supply one. Where ways are grouped behind two residual devices, one earth fault removes everything in that group, and loft conversions often sit on a way of their own. We work through the ways until the readings give it away.

No power to the shed

Buried runs to an outbuilding fail two ways. Water in a gland or in the shed's own board sends earth current back and releases the device indoors. Physical damage is the other, and depending on what the cable has touched it either faults hard or goes open. Testing the submain from both ends separates them.

RCD trips straight back off again

That says the leakage is present continuously rather than intermittently: a neutral in contact with earth, a soaked fitting, occasionally a worn device. Everything comes off, the device is proved on its own, then ways are restored in pairs until one pulls it back down.

Upstairs lights keep tripping the breaker

Lighting rarely draws enough to overload, so a breaker releasing on the upstairs lights is reporting a short. A lamp taking the circuit with it as it fails, a screw through cable beneath floorboards, or damaged flex at a pendant cover most of them. We remove fittings and test rather than guess.

Outside lights trip the fuse box

Outdoor fittings admit water eventually, and wet terminals pass current to earth, which is why the residual device usually goes rather than the breaker. If the breaker goes instead, something in the fitting or its cable has shorted. We isolate the outdoor way so the house stays live while we work.

Nothing gets left in a state we wouldn't be happy living with ourselves. Where a full repair needs parts, we make safe, get the sound circuits back on and return to finish.

How It Works

Guidance First,
Attendance Where Needed

A number of situations improve considerably in the first few minutes of a telephone call. Which device to switch off, whether the main switch should be operated, and what ought to be left alone entirely.

If the fault can safely wait until normal hours, we will say so rather than attend at an out-of-hours rate. Where it cannot, an arrival window and a call-out figure are confirmed before we travel.

Can you come out tonight?

The storm has taken out the whole lane. Is that you or UK Power Networks?

Check the neighbours first. If the whole lane is dark, the fault is on the network side and you want UK Power Networks on 105; no private electrician can touch their overhead lines. Call us when the problem is yours alone: the street has power and you do not, or the supply came back but your RCD will not hold, which usually means the surge has damaged something on your side of the meter.

We're up a wooded lane outside town rather than in East Grinstead itself. Will you come out?

The lanes are the reason storm work makes up so much of what we do around East Grinstead, so a rural address does not put you outside the patch. Tell the person on the phone exactly where you are, including anything that affects access such as a shared drive or a locked gate, and they will give you an arrival window that accounts for the extra miles rather than one that ignores them.
