Emergency Call-Outs
Every era of Crawley hides its wiring differently, from the ceiling voids of an Ifield semi to the trunking of a converted town-centre office floor. We test methodically until the fault is proven, not guessed at.
A board that refuses to reset in Gossops Green or Pound Hill usually has one leaking circuit dragging the rest down with it. We find that circuit, isolate it and leave everything healthy switched back on.
Half the house dead in Southgate, or a flat dark above a neighbourhood parade: the first job is proving whether the fault sits with you, the landlord or UK Power Networks, and we do that before anyone spends money in the wrong place.
A socket that crackles or scorches gets worse with every plug that goes into it. We isolate the point safely, inspect the cabling behind the faceplate and replace what is damaged, usually on the same visit.
From airport-side hotels to stairwells in town-centre blocks, dead emergency lighting is a compliance failure as well as a hazard. We repair it, test it and give you the paperwork to prove it.
A drill through a cable while putting up shelves, or insulation chewed through in a loft: we make the run safe, repair or replace it properly and test the whole circuit before it goes back into service.
Who We Are
Our 24-hour Crawley electrical service provides help when faults occur unexpectedly, including evenings, weekends and overnight. Before attending, we can gather information about the problem and advise you of any precautions worth taking while you wait.
Repairs and testing are carried out in line with BS 7671, and notifiable work is dealt with appropriately under Part P. Where further repairs are necessary, these are discussed separately rather than being undertaken without your agreement.
Common Call-Outs
The faults below make up the bulk of the calls we receive. Any of them is a reasonable reason to get in touch, whatever the hour.
If the board can be reached safely, isolate the circuit that has failed and leave it isolated. Please unplug the appliance that was operating when the fault occurred.
Damaged cable, sockets showing heat damage and wet wiring should not be handled. A breaker that trips the moment it is reset has detected a genuine problem on that circuit.
Smoke or the smell of burning should be treated as a fire. Leave the building, call the emergency services, and contact us once everyone is clear.

Fault Finding
An intermittent trip that behaves perfectly while you are watching still has a cause. We work through the installation circuit by circuit with proper test equipment, so the repair fixes what is actually wrong rather than guessing at it.

Let us know what has happened. An electrician answers rather than a call handler, at any time of day or night.
We confirm the call-out rate and give a realistic arrival window before an electrician travels to you.
The faulty circuit is safely isolated, then tested until the cause is identified and can be explained clearly.
Vehicles carry the parts that fail most often, so most call-outs are completed without a second visit.
A quick picture of your board or the damaged fitting tells us more than ten minutes of description, and it means we arrive with the right parts, whether you are in Bewbush or Forge Wood.

These six account for most of what we are called out to here. Find yours and you will know roughly what the visit involves.
See Our Power Loss Service → 0333 360 6904The most common call and often the quickest to resolve. When everything is out, the circuits are rarely the problem; something feeding them is. Proving where the supply stops is the first task, and if it stops before your board it becomes a job for the network crew.
Where one residual device covers a group of ways, a single earth fault removes the whole group. We see the same board arrangements repeatedly around here, so the grouping is often familiar before the cover is off, which shortens the search considerably.
Kitchens frequently have a way to themselves and hold more heating elements than any other room, so earth faults tend to begin there. Fitted units also conceal joints and spurs. We test the circuit end to end, then withdraw appliances in turn until it holds.
The first question is which switch. A residual device that refuses is still seeing current escape to earth. A breaker that refuses has a short or a sustained overload on that one way. Identical symptom, two entirely different investigations.
That combination is genuinely useful. With nothing escaping to earth, overcurrent is what remains: either the demand exceeds the rating, or two conductors are touching. We measure the actual load first, then hunt the short if the demand does not account for it.
Dryers run hot and humid, which is hard on an element and the insulation around it, and lint makes it worse over months. Running the machine from a socket on another circuit is a fast check: if that releases too, the fault belongs to the dryer.
The board doesn't get handed back in a state you can't use. Sound circuits are restored, faulty ones stay isolated, and you know exactly what's left to do.

Who calls us
Three groups make up most of our Crawley work. Each receives the same response times and the same standard of certification.
Domestic emergency electricians for power loss, fuse boxes that trip, dead sockets and lighting faults, evenings and weekends included.
Rental repairs for landlords and agents, with written confirmation of the work suitable for tenants and managing agents.
Commercial attendance for shops, offices and industrial units, including three-phase supply and distribution board faults.
Emergency Repairs
Houses, rented properties and commercial units are all attended by the same electricians, to the same response times. Three-phase supplies and distribution boards form a regular part of the work.
For business premises, downtime carries a cost of its own. Where it is possible to work around trading hours we will do so, and the installation is always made safe before the longer repair is considered.
Beyond Crawley
An engineer working the Crawley end of our patch is already well placed for the towns around it. From here we also attend Horsham, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath & Burgess Hill, with the same approach: make it safe first, then explain the rest.
FAQ
Feel free to contact us for more information
Probably not. Langley Green was built quickly in the early fifties, so every house on your street was wired at the same time to the same spec. Cable insulation, fuse boards and accessories age at roughly the same rate, which is why faults in Crawley cluster street by street in a way they do not in towns that grew gradually. If your neighbours are having problems, it is worth getting your own installation inspected before it becomes your emergency.
Not on its own, but it is a warning sign. A rewireable board from the fifties or sixties has no RCD protection, so a fault that a modern board would disconnect in milliseconds can keep flowing. It also usually means the wiring behind it is original too. We can make any immediate fault safe on the night, then explain what a board upgrade or rewire would involve under current BS 7671 requirements. A house still on its original board is running out of margin.
Three-phase and distribution-board work is core to what we do, and out of hours is exactly when commercial faults matter most. Tell us on the phone whether you have lost one phase or all three, and what is still running, and we will prioritise accordingly. One thing to do straight away: switch off three-phase machinery until the supply is checked, because a lost phase can quietly damage motors and compressors.
Newer does not always mean fault-free. Nineties estates like Maidenbower were built with early split-load consumer units that are now approaching thirty years old, and the classic failure is nuisance RCD tripping: one aging appliance or a damp outdoor socket takes out half the house. The cabling itself is usually sound. Most calls we take from Maidenbower and Pound Hill are about tracing the one circuit or appliance pulling everything else down, which is a diagnosis job rather than a rewire.
